Raphael Kirchner (1876-1917) was an Austrian illustrator who's work focussed mainly, but not only, on picture post cards. At the age of 24, around the turn of the century, he had already reached fame for his fantastic colourful Jugendstil post cards in which elegant women were a central theme. Later his erotic 'pin up' sketches proved popular during the First World War not only among his compatriots but also among British and French servicemen. Kirchner was born in Vienna in 1876 and attended the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in the city. The turn of the century brought Kirchner to Paris where he remained until the outbreak of war in August 1914 when he moved to the U.S. He produced in excess of 1,000 postcards during his short lifetime. His "Geisha" series was particular successful, being reprinted four times to produce a total of 40,000 copies. He died on 2 August 1917 in New York. During his lifetime Raphael Kirchner was one of the most prolific illustrators of picture postcards. To date nearly eight hundred postcards of diverse subjects designed by him have been discovered. In the three periods in which we have subdivided the whole production of Kirchner's postcards, we have also individuated homogeneous groups, separating, above all, the signed sets from those unsigned.
The book 229 pages (more than 100 in full colour) with a full picture catalogue of most of his ca. 800 post cards. A delight for the eye ! |
